Critical Care at John C. Lincoln
North Mountain Hospital

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)

Overview

The Critical Care department at John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital is made up of two units—the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU).

Patient Population

The ICU cares for trauma patients brought in through the hospital’s Level 1 Trauma Center as well as medical/surgical patients. The CVICU cares for cardiovascular patients, including those with MIs, open heart, CHF and medical/surgical patients.

Unit Size

The ICU and CVICU are both 22-bed units.

Scheduling & Shifts

Schedules in both departments are flexible and self-scheduling is done with consideration for specialty programs. RNs may occasionally float to other departments, including the CVICU and two telemetry units. The 12-hour shifts are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Clinical Support

A respiratory care practitioner and a unit-based pharmacist are stationed on the units. The Critical Care units staff a 24-hour rapid response team, which is available for ancillary support to the floors.

Co-Worker Comments

“This really is a unit and, like a well-oiled machine, we work well together in any situation. We are all professionals who work side-by-side with one goal in mind—managing patient care in the safest and quickest way possible. Critical care also provides continual opportunities for advancement in a variety of roles. This is a fantastic unit.”
