Banding Together to Win a Beacon Award

Cynthia Burnett, Valerie Curry, Shelly Diana, Krista Crawley, Cathy Frye and Jodi Todd, all co-workers in the ICU, banded together and set their sights on the Beacon Award. Together with Kari Zimmerman, who provided research assistance on quality performance, and Sheila Humphreys, who typed the application and made the numerous revisions, they were successful.

The team had to address 42 criteria in six different categories to complete the application. It took them almost seven months to find the information and write the first submittal. After the initial application, the Beacon committee asked a number of questions, and the group worked another five months to answer the second set of questions. This was not a management assignment; the commitment to apply for the award came from this dedicated team of critical care co-workers.

"Receiving an award such as the Beacon is the result of two things: the reality of our patient care environment and having co-workers willing to work to meet the requirements of the arduous application process," said Sue Hanauer, North Mountain’s vice president of Patient Care Services.

"Our environment in Intensive Care and throughout our hospital is one that produces superior care at the bedside. We value collaboration among clinicians and co-workers. Our environment is professional, healing and upholds strong values of evidence-based practice while putting the patient first."

The work that went into meeting the requirements of the application came as a result of the passion and energy of the co-workers in Intensive Care.

For their efforts, John C. Lincoln gave each member of the team a STAR Award. Short for "Special Thanks And Recognition," the award program recognizes co-workers who go above and beyond, whether it's to help a fellow co-worker, patient or community member. The most recent recipients have given unselfishly of themselves and their time, demonstrating the essence of compassion. John C. is fortunate to be surrounded by such incredible individuals.
