The 13,000-pound MRI couldn't just be carried up the stairs or in the elevator.
Instead, a crane lifted the new, $1.5 million magnetic resonance imaging machine through a hole created in the second story of the John C. Lincoln Breast Health and Research Center, currently under construction in north Phoenix.
The rigging and platform added another 13,000 pounds to the load; the crane from Southwest Industrial Rigging had a total capacity of 36,000 pounds.

The room housing the MRI on the second floor has been reinforced to handle the weight. The walls, ceiling and floor of the room also have a layer of protection so that surrounding rooms will not be impacted by the magnet.
After the hole in the side of the building has been rebuilt, the rest of the breast MRI—the patient table and electronic equipment—will be delivered, said Kim Burke, owner's representative for construction of the second floor suites.
A small group applauded and snapped pictures as the MRI was being lifted into place, including Sherry Gage, director of the Breast Health and Research Center, and Linda Greer, MD, one of the breast-imaging radiologists who will be dedicated to the center.
The center opens May 4 at 19646 N. 27th Ave., Phoenix, across the street from John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital. A satellite of the center opens the same day at North Mountain Outpatient Imaging, 9250 N. Third St., Suite 1002, Phoenix, to provide services near John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital. Patients can schedule at either location by calling 623-780-HOPE (4673).
