Tough Economy No Obstacle for Generous Golfers

Golfers rallied around the need to raise money for Desert Mission's community programs and raised $184,000 in the 23rd annual Lincoln Guild Invitational at Camelback Golf Club. Major event sponsors were Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, EMC Corporation and Ensemble DevMan of Arizona.

"Desert Mission's Food Bank, Children's Dental Clinic and Community Health Services are serving more families than ever this year, due to the economic difficulties their families are facing," said Cindy Hallman, vice president, John C. Lincoln Health Network and CEO of Desert Mission. "The golfers and sponsors of the Lincoln Guild Invitational again showed their commitment to the community, just as they have since the tournament was started 23 years ago."

Tournament chairman Dr. Jim Fishman commented: "Even in this year’s down economy, we had 204 golfers and 29 new sponsors. That says a lot about the Desert Mission cause — people believe in their work and want to support it."

The work of Desert Mission was started more than 80 years ago by volunteers who provided food, shelter and basic medical care to those in need who lived on the "sunny slope" of North Mountain in North Phoenix. The area was a haven for many who traveled to Phoenix, seeking help for their lung diseases in the dry desert air.

In 2008, Desert Mission served more than 30,000 individuals through its Lincoln Learning Center, Children’s Dental Clinic, Community Health Center, Adult Day Health Care, Food Bank, Marley House Behavioral Health Center and Neighborhood Renewal. Learn more about these Desert Mission programs.
